Forest

If humanity itself emerged from nature, can the things created by

humans truly be considered artificial objects, separate from nature?

​

This perspective is embedded in the work of artist Kim YoungHwan,

who reconstructs the cities and buildings surrounding us—the very foundations of contemporary life through wood.

​

There are moments in the midst of an exhausting day when, looking off

into the distance, the city around us suddenly feels unfamiliar and desolate.

​

The "Forest" created by Kim Younghwan softens this sense of loneliness

felt by contemporary individuals, allowing viewers standing among the works to feel as though they are enveloped within a safe and protective 'holding environment'.

​

That impression may quietly resurface one day, sending subtle ripples

through everyday life and leaving behind a lingering warmth.

​

자연 속에서 발생한 인간,

그렇다면 사람에 의해 만들어진 것들은

자연과 분리된 인공물이라고 칭할 수 있는 것일까.

​

우리를 둘러싼 도시와 건물들,

현대사회에서 사람의 터전을 이루는 것들을

목재를 통해 재구성한 김영환 작가의 작품에는

이러한 시각이 드러난다.

​

고단한 하루 중, 먼 곳으로 잠시 시선을 돌릴 때

나를 둘러싼 도시가 유독 낯설고 삭막하게 느껴질 때가 있다.

​

김영환 작가가 세운 ‘숲’은 현대인이 느끼는 그러한 고독을 희석하고,

작품들 가운데 선 관객으로 하여금 오히려

안전한 공간(holding environment)에 둘러싸인 기분을 느끼게 한다.

​

그러한 인상은 어느 날 문득 다시 나타나,

일상에 작은 파문을 일으킬 것이다.
